Magnolia nabs U.S. rights to ‘Emergo’

Magnet bows Cortes scarer first on VOD

Magnolia has acquired U.S. rights to “Emergo,” the latest genre pic from Rodrigo Cortes and Adrian Guerra, the team behind Sundance players “Buried” and “Red Lights.”

Using the same release strategy as on “Melancholia,” Magnolia will bow “Emergo” via its Magnet label with the early VOD release timed for April 27 and theatrical six weeks later on June 1.

Rena Ronson and David Flynn from the UTA Independent Group handled the sale to Magnolia.

Written by Cortes, directed by Spanish tyro Carles Torrens, and starring Kai Lennox and Michael O’Keefe, the English-language “Emergo” turns on a team of high-tech parapsychologists who investigate anomalous phenomena in an old, eerie house.

Guerra produces through his new Barcelona-based production label, Nostromo Pictures.

The U.S. deal crowns vigorous international sales, handled outside the U.S. and Spain by Gregoire Melin’s Paris-based Kinology. Of major territories, Japan has now closed with Presidio.

“Emergo” sold to Momentum for U.K., Alliance for Canada, Universum for Germany and Australia’s Hopscotch Films off a first American Film Market screening. Cine Video y TV distributes in Mexico.

“Emergo” cost under $3 million, aided by a Spain shoot, with Barcelona doubling for California, and 90% interiors, Guerra said. Nevertheless, it uses 200 vfx, while 90% of effects are physical, he added.

Deal was negotiated by Dori Begley and Chris Matson for Magnolia and Jim Meenaghan of UTA and attorney Jonathan Gardner of Cohen Gardner on behalf of the filmmakers.
