Slovakia submits Grofova's pic to Acad
The feature debut of documentary filmmaker Iveta Grofova, the Slovak-Czech co-production is a raw look at young Roma girl Dorotka (Dorota Billa) and her rapid descent into exploitation after she goes to the Czech Republic to work in a textile factory
The film, which includes animated sections to reveal Dorotka’s emotions, relies upon a largely non-professional cast in authentic settings.
Produced by Slovakia’s Protos and Czech Republic’s Endorfilm, with the involvement of Czech Television, Radio and Television Slovakia, and Slovak shingles Atelier.doc, Partizanfilm and Hulapa film, “Made in Ash” world preemed in the East of the West competition at Karlovy Vary in July.
The film beat 10 other contenders for the Slovak Film and Television Academy nomination.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the five nominees for best foreign film on Jan. 15. The 85th Academy Awards ceremony takes place Feb. 24.
