Five-city film fest adds Filmin streaming facility

SAN SEBASTIAN — Marie Losier’s “The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye,” Frederick Wiseman “Crazy Horse” and Evan Godell’s “Bellflower” will compete in the Mapfre Foundation’s 3rd 4 + 1 Film Festival.

A Berlin docu Teddy Award winner, “Ballad,” New York-based Losier’s feature deb turns on performance artist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge’s resort to plastic surgery to become identical to his lover, the eponymous Lady Jaye.

A 2011 Venice Days player, the Celluloid Dreams-sold “Crazy Horse” depicts new show numbers and backstage life at Paris’ legendary nude revue.

A Sundance hit last year, male fantasy parable “Bellflower” established first-time director Evan Glodell, and indeed cinematographer Joel Hodge, as talents to track.

4 +1 has already announced three competish titles: Johnnie To’s Kowloon-set criss-crosser, “Life Without Principle”; “Terri,” directed by Azazel Jacobs (“Momma’s Man,” “The Good Times Kid”), which world preemed to upbeat reactions at Sundance l; and “Almayer’s Folly,” vet Chantal Akerman take on Conrad’s father-daughter tale, set in Malaysia.

Running Nov. 21-25, 4 + 1 unspools simultaneously in Bogota, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. Its competition titles must be movies sans commercial distribution in these cities.

“60% to 70% of the titles we present find distribution after 4 + 1,” Pablo Jimenez Burillo, Mapfre Foundation Culture Institute director general, said at San Sebastian Festival, where 4 + 1 co-hosts a Contemporary Brazilian Cinema panorama and a Small Film Studio Kids’ Tent, offering tykes workshops and other cinema-themed fun.

For the first year, 4 +1 titles will also be streamed by Spain’s leading indie/arthouse VOD portal, Filmin.

“We sometimes complain in Europe that certain films aren’t released. In Latin America, outside festival circuits and the biggest cities, [upscale film] exhibition infrastructures are very weak,” Jimenez Burillo said..

“But there’s an enthusiasm for culture which you don’t always sense any longer in Europe,” he added.

4 + 1 titles compete for an Audience Award, won in 2011 by “King of Devil’s Island,” helmed by Norway’s Marius Holst, and at the 1st 4 + 1 by Agnes Varda’s “The Beaches of Agnes.”
