Universal skeds limited mega-screen bow in New York, LA and Canada

Looking to boost appeal among fans of the musical, Universal has partnered with Imax to release “Les Miserables” in select mega-screen theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto and Montreal the same day as its nationwide release Dec. 25.

As part of the limited Imax bow, the company will convert the tuner’s image and sound quality using Imax’s digital re-mastering technology.

“‘Les Miserables’ is a musical epic that lends itself perfectly to the Imax experience,” said Nikki Rocco, prexy of distribution for Universal. “Audiences will be immersed in the unforgettable music and breathtaking visuals that only Imax can provide.”

Based on the long-running musical, “Les Miserables” stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried. Tom Hooper directed.

Imax is committed to Warner Bros.’ “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” starting Dec. 14 through Jan. 25, when Paramount bows “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.” Hence, that’s why the Imax theaters for “Les Miserables” are located in major markets, where Imax has multiple locations.

“Les Miserables” will have a more extensive Imax roll out internationally, starting Jan. 10 in the Netherlands, followed by Russia, Mexico, Italy, France, Brazil and the U.K.
