Latvia selects ‘Gulf Stream’ for Oscar nom

Winner of Latvian national awards set for Oct. 12 release

MOSCOW — Latvia was among the last international territories to announce its entry for foreign language Oscar, Friday when Yevgeni Pashkevich’s “Gulf Stream Under the Iceberg” was nominated.

The film, which won best film and best director at the Latvian national film awards, is slated for local release Oct. 12.

It’s based on ancient myths about Adam’s first wife Lillith, an immortal without a soul who is made of clay and not from Adam’s rib. Lillith is an amoral character who knows neither good nor evil but whom men find irresistible. Once smitten they are forever in her power.

The cast includes Ksenia Rappoport, a Russian actress who has made a successful career in European movies, including Guiseppe Capotondi’s “The Double Hour”.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the five nominees for best foreign film on Jan. 10. The 85th Academy Awards ceremony takes place Feb. 24.
