Karlovy Vary presents top honor to ‘Man’

Helmer Lund's pic nabs Crystal Globes for film, actor

KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic — Karlovy Vary’s Crystal Globe jury spread the love around Saturday as the 47th edition of the Czech fest wrapped with prizes for seven of the 12 competition films.

Norway’s mid-life crisis study “The Almost Man, helmed by Martin Lund,” won the grand prize for film with leading man Henrik Rafaelsen scoring the actor kudo, shared with Eryk Lubos for his perf in Polish revenge tale “To Kill a Beaver.”

Jury, lead by Richard Pena of the New York Film Festival, honored helmer Marco Tullio Giordana’s political suspenser “Piazza Fontana: The Italian Conspiracy” with a special prize.

Directing nod went to Canadian Rafael Ouellet for domestic drama “Camion.” Iran’s Leila Hatami won actress honors for grief portrait “The Last Step” by Ali Mosaffa.

Jury gave a special mention to four actors — Pavel Liska, Tomas Matonoha, Marek Daniel and Josef Polasek — in Czech art film parody “Polski Film,” plus Yannis Papadopoulos, the young star of Greece’s “Boy Eating the Bird’s Food.”

Stylistic Ukrainian war story adaptation “House With a Turret” by Eva Neymann won the East of the West section, with a special mention to sci-fi “Vanishing Waves” helmed by Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper (Lithuania-France-Belgium).

Bulgaria’s Ilian Metev won the documentary prize for “Sofia’s Last Ambulance” with a special mention going to Czech Helena Trestikova for “Private Universe,” covering three decades in a family’s life.

Some 11,500 film fans chose Belgian helmer Geoffrey Enthoven’s road comedy “Come as You Are” for the audience award after spending nine days lining up in record heat and rain to see 218 films.
