Jude’s ‘Family’ wins Sarajevo’s Heart

Fest closes with 'Trashed,' presented by Irons

LONDON — Romanian director Radu Jude won the 18th Sarajevo Film Festival Saturday night taking a $20,000 prize and Heart of Sarajevo award for his black comedy about divorce, “Everybody in Our Family.”

Jude’s third feature chronicles a farcical descent into slapstick violence and despair when a divorced father is refused a scheduled holiday weekend with his daughter by his bitchy ex-wife.

Turkish director Emin Alper picked up a $12,000 special jury award for his sensitive drama of social conflict, “Beyond the Hill,” at a fest that has become south-east Europe’s leading movie showcase since its launch in the then war-torn Bosnian capital in 1995.

Best actress went to Marija Pikic for local film, “Children of Sarajevo,” and best actor to Uliks Fehmiu for Serb pic “Redemption Street.”

Fest, which is noted for its Berlinale-associated talent campus, project incubator Cinelink and industry focus, added star power with an opening visit by Angelina Jolie, who became an honorary citizen of Bosnia in recognition of her directorial debut “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” about Bosnian women raped by Serb troops.

Jolie partially shot the film in Sarajevo last year.

Jeremy Irons, a regular fest visitor, came for the closing Saturday, where he presented Candida Brady’s documentary “Trashed” in which he looks at the garbage problem worldwide.
