Bigscreen exhibitor touts improved color, sound
Mega-screen exhib Imax unveiled today its dual 4K laser projector capable of digital projection on screens 120 feet wide or larger. The announcement coincided with this morning’s Barco laser projector demonstration at CinemaCon. The new projector will vastly improve color contrast, particularly for varying shades of black, according to Imax. The system also upgrades its sound system, with patented calibration upgraded from five to eight discrete channels, with a sub-bass. Imax began showing an early prototype last week to exhibs, filmmakers and studio execs. What does this mean? Initially, the projector will benefit the largest screens (80 feet or larger) and dome locations, which have only before had access to analog film. Digital projection currently only caters to screens up to 70 feet wide. The projector also reduces the cost of prints for studios and exhibs by providing more flexibility in programming and access to more content. The laser light source is also expected to remain constant through the life of the system. The technology will be available by the end of 2013.
