Image takes non-theatrical on ‘Red Hook Summer’

Robert Johnson's new acquisition handling North American alt platforms

Image Entertainment, which was acquired in April by BET founder Robert Johnson, has come on board to distribute Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer” for all non-theatrical platforms in North America.

“Red Hook,” already been set for an Aug. 10 theatrical launch through Variance, will go out via Image’s One Village label in the fourth quarter.

The film, which world premiered at Sundance in January, is directed by Lee, who reprises his role as “Mookie” from “Do the Right Thing” along with Jules Brown, Tony Lysaith, Clarke Peters and Nate Parker. Lee co-wrote the script with James McBride. Lee’s production company 40 Acres and A Mule Filmworks produced with McBride.

“Red Hook” is part of Lee’s Chronicles of Brooklyn films, which also include “She’s Gotta Have It,” “Do The Right Thing,” “Crooklyn,” “Clockers” and “He Got Game.” It centers on a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather in the housing projects of Red Hook.

Johnson, chairman of The RLJ Companies, founder of BET and one of the nation’s most successful media entrepreneurs, acquired Image in April.

Deal was brokered by CAA and Artie Indursky and Robert Strent of Grubman Indursky Shire & Meiselas on behalf of Lee and 40 Acres and a Mule with Bill Bromiley, Brett Dismuke and Michael Bayer of Image Entertainment.
