ILM teams with China’s Base FX

Strategic alliance covers effects work on Hollywood films

Industrial Light & Magic has struck a strategic alliance with Beijing-based vfx studio Base FX, an Emmy Award winner for its work on “Boardwalk Empire.”

Under the terms of the deal, Base will be exclusive to ILM for vfx work on Hollywood studio features. Base will still be at liberty to work without ILM on Chinese films, indie pics and TV.

Base has been a significant subcontractor for ILM for some time, having done entire sequences for “Super 8,” “I Am Number Four,” “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and the upcoming “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”

ILM will help supervise Base’s efforts on pics where they are working together.

Base was founded in 2003 by Chris Bremble. Besides “Boardwalk Empire,” Base contributed vfx to HBO productions “The Pacific” and “Grey Gardens.”
