Pic takes in $18.9 mil to cross $200 mil domestically; 'Titans' earns $12.4 mil
It seems the domestic B.O. is coming back for seconds of Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games” this weekend, which earned $18.9 million on Friday. The boffo actioner became the fourth fastest film to cross $200 million domestically, reaching the milestone in only eight days (its current cume is $208.8 million). This frame, it is positioned to add about $55 million to its total, down roughly 64% from its opening. Warner Bros.-Legendary’s “Wrath of the Titans” took second Friday with $12.4 million, 66% of which came from 3D screens suggesting the fallout from predecessor “Clash of the Titans'” much maligned conversion may be having little effect. Additionally, $1.7 million of Friday’s gross came from Imax. It’s looking to land just north of $30 million Stateside, with better figures abroad as with 2010’s “Clash,” which earned two-thirds of its worldwide haul overseas. So far down 52% from “Clash,” “Wrath” opens day-and-date in almost every major market. In third, Relativity’s “Mirror Mirror” earned $5.9 million. Pic will likely struggle to top $20 million, but is playing well to its core of under-18 girls and boys, who gave the film an A-range Cinemascore, with a B+ from auds overall. Given this and the unpredictability of family fare, it could over perform. Either way, Relativity is looking to show off longer legs as Easter weekend approaches. Holdovers “21 Jump Street” and “The Lorax” continue to perform well. The former earned $4.7 million and the latter $2 million Friday for cumes of $82.7 million and $183.5 million, respectively.
