‘Hotel Transylvania’ scores on Columbus Day

Sony animated feature reaps $4.7 million on Monday

“Hotel Transylvania” had a scary good day at the domestic box office on Monday thanks to kids out of school for Columbus Day. The Sony toon holdover grossed $4.7 million that day, up a whopping 159% over the pic’s same-day gross last week.

Fox’s “Taken 2” still had enough of a lead throughout the weekend to stay at No. 1 during the holiday, with $5.5 million; domestic cume is $55 million.

“Hotel” has cumed $81.4 million Stateside, with nearly $115 million worldwide.

Columbus Day isn’t normally considered a major holiday for moviegoing, though it can provide a welcome mid-fall surge, especially for family fare.

“Hotel” showed surprising resilience amid the opening of Disney’s “Frankenweenie” last weekend, dropping just 36%. The Disney toon, meanwhile, struggled in the three-day frame with just $11.4 million and an additional $1.7 million Monday.

“Hotel” faces sizable family competish come Nov. 2, when Disney bows “Wreck-It-Ralph.”
