‘Hobbit’ bests newcomers to retain top spot with $10.7 mil; pic surpasses $200 mil domestic cume

'Django' in second with $9.7 mil; 'Les Miserables' finishes day with $9.4 mil

For the second week in a row, and the third since it opened, domestic auds overlooked a Christmas feast of newcomers in favor of Warner Bros.’ “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” at the Friday B.O. earning it an additional $10.7 million.

Friday’s gross propelled the trilogy-commencing epic just past the $200 million domestic cume milestone. Meanwhile, a pair of Christmas Day openers are tight on “Hobbit’s” heels.

Going into the weekend, B.O. observers expected Universal’s “Les Miserables” to take first this frame, which is still possible but not as likely as “Hobbit” maintaining control. The tuner wound up in third on Friday with $9.4 million, and will likely jump to second before Monday with a three-day close to $28 million.

In second Friday, Weinstein Co.’s “Django Unchained” just edged “Les Miserables” with $9.7 million. Its hard R rating will likely prevent “Django” from keeping its place for long, but its height is certainly a demonstration of strong adult interest in the revenge western. “Django” has cumed $43 million since it opened on Tuesday.

The final Christmas Day opener, Fox’s “Parental Guidance,” earned $5.1 million for fourth on Friday. Planned as family counterprogramming to heavier Oscar-contending pics, “Guidance” is meeting expectations for decent holiday biz, beating back Paramount’s “Jack Reacher” (about $4.5 million) and U’s “This is 40” ($4.1 million).
