
Though Matt Damon co-wrote “Promised Land” as a potential directorial debut, scheduling problems forced him to call in his old friend — and “Good Will Hunting” helmer — Gus Van Sant to take over. “It was always a kind of hope that if Matt was going to direct that he would run into some kind of trouble and that I could step in and help out on the project,” says Van Sant, who cites finding the right townspeople as the pic’s trickiest aspect.
