‘Glee’ scribe rewriting ‘Dirty Dancing’

Lionsgate taps Brad Falchuk to redo musical reimagining of '87 pic

Lionsgate has tapped “Glee” co-creator Brad Falchuk to rewrite Maria Maggenti’s screenplay for “Dirty Dancing,” a musical reimagining inspired by the popular 1987 pic starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

The remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions.

“High School Musical” helmer Kenny Ortega, the original film’s choreographer, will direct as well as produce with Debra Martin Chase (“The Princess Diaries”). Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote and co-produced the original pic, will also be involved in a producing and consulting capacity.

Lionsgate is skedded to release “Dirty Dancing” on July 26, 2013.

A “Dirty Dancing” sequel, “Havana Nights,” was released in 2004.

In addition to Fox’s hit series “Glee,” Falchuk co-created FX’s “American Horror Story” with Ryan Murphy. WME-repped Falchuk is also co-writing Sony’s musical comedy “One Hit Wonders” with Murphy and their fellow “Glee” cohort Ian Brennan.
