Gazvoda’s ‘Trip’ sets out for Oscars

Slovenia selects pic as foreign-language Oscar entry

LONDON — Helmer-scribe Nejc Gazvoda’s debut “A Trip,” about three friends on a road-trip to the beach before starting adult life, is Slovenia’s entry for foreign-language Oscar consideration, the Slovenian Film Center said Friday.

Plot centers on young soldier Gregor (Jure Henigman) about to go to Afghanistan, Ziva (Nina Rakovec), who says she is off to study abroad and self-loathing homosexual Andrej (Lucca Cimpric), who intends to stay at home.

Tensions build between the three as unspoken secrets are revealed.

The film has garnered a host of domestic and international awards, including for screenplay, actors Henigman and Rakovec, music and editing at last year’s Slovene Film Festival, and the best of fest award at Nashville this year.

It has taken $77,000 — about one third of its budget — since its domestic release in January in the small former Yugoslav territory.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the five nominees for best foreign film on Jan. 15. The 85th Academy Awards ceremony takes place Feb. 24.
