Freestyle nabs ‘Playroom’

Tribeca pic to launch in theaters, VOD on Feb. 8

Freestyle Releasing and Freestyle Digital Media have acquired theatrical, DVD and VOD rights to Julia Dyer’s drama “The Playroom,” starring John Hawkes and Molly Parker.

The film, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, was produced by Stephen Dyer (“Hysteria”) and Angie Meyer (“Wuss”). Freestyle will launch the movie on theatrical and DVD/VOD on Feb. 8.

Story, set in the suburbs during the 1970s, centers on a teenager who acts as big sister and surrogate mother to her three younger siblings, telling them fantastical stories to mask what is happening downstairs. Hawkes and Parker portray her hard-drinking parents.

Deal was negotiated by Freestyle’s Susan Jackson and Chris Charalambous, Bill Straus of BGP and Jonathan Gray of Gray, Krauss Stratford des Rochers.
