MTV has debuted the first official trailer for Oliver Stone’s “Savages,” the Mexican cartel ensembler starring Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Benicio del Toro and Selma Hayek.
Pic tells the story of two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins forced to work for a Mexican drug cartel after their free-spirited girlfriend is kidnapped. Emile Hirsch, John Travolta and Uma Thurman co-star.
It kind of makes sense for MTV to exclusively launch the trailer, as the youthful drama has remnants of “The Hills” interplaying with Stone’s savagely vulgar style.
Should be interesting to see how the R-rated drama is received by adult and younger auds.
Universal Pictures was confident enough to move “Savages” from the fall to a premium July 6 release date–a counterprogramming move that slots the gritty drama against Sony’s “Amazing Spider-Man” (July 3) and Par’s “Katy Perry 3D Concert” (July 5).
Based on the novel by Don Winslow, “Savages” was produced by Todd Arnow and Eric Kopeloff.
