Fire at Toei Studio takes sound stage

No deaths or injuries were reported

Tokyo: A fire burned down a sound stage on Sunday at the Toei Kyoto Studio, which first opened in a 1926 and has produced hundreds of pics including the internationally acclaimed “Battles Without Honor and Humanity” gang action series. No deaths or injuries were reported.

The blaze, struck the 13,993 sq. ft. sound stage, which has been in use since 1957, shortly after noon on Sunday. Nearly 100 people were in the building at the time when an alarm sound in the electrical power room, but all escaped to safety. Thirty fire trucks arrived and had the fire under control by 2:00 p.m. but the building was totally destroyed.

The nearly 1,800 patrons in nearby Toei Kyoto Studio Park, a popular movie theme park operated by Toei, were evacuated and some attractions were closed.

A studio spokesman said that the sound stage had been inspected by the fire department, but no fire hazards were reported. The exact economic impact of the blaze has not yet been reported.
