Thriller turns on a schizophrenic killer
Guido Rud’s FilmSharks has closed international sales rights outside Argentina and France on Argentinean helmer Adrian Caetano’s hitwoman thriller “Mala” (Evil Woman).Deal comes as another new FilmSharks property, “Orol, King of the Bs,” has been picked up for U.S. distribution by Pantelion Films, a joint venture between Lionsgate Entertainment and Mexico’s Televisa Group that specializes in Latino pics. Budgeted at $1.6 million — high for Argentina — “Mala” is produced by Buenos Aires’ Magma Cine, owned by Juan Pablo Gugliotta and Nathalia Videla Pena, in association with Caetano’s La Expresion del Deseo, and Anibal Esmoris and in co-production with Franck Ribiere and Verane Frediani’s La Ferme Prods. in Paris. Now in post, it turns on a hired killer, Rosario, who murders men who abuse women. Rosario, a schizophrenic, is played by four actresses. Televisa’s Videocine will distribute in Mexico, Rud said. Helmed by Sebastian del Amo, “Orol” is a comedic, black and white biopic of 1940-60s Mexican Golden Age cineaste Juan Orol. A prolific director of gangster movies and rumba romancers in which invention triumphs over budgets and talent, Orol has been dubbed Mexico’s Ed Wood. “Orol” won best first Mexican film at the Guadalajara Festival in March.
