Films Distribution takes ‘6 Acts’

Gurfinkel's debut screens in San Sebastian's New Director spread

SAN SEBASTIAN — In the third announced pick-up at this year’s San Sebastian fest, Paris-based Films Distribution has acquired international rights outside Israel to “Six Acts,” which world preems Friday in the Spanish fest’s New Directors strand.

Written by Rona Segal and directed by Israel’s Jonathan Gurfinkel, Tel Aviv-set “Six Acts” turns on Gili, a girl who hooks up with several boys at a new high-school so as to improve her social status. The encounters become more and more sexual, until it’s not clear if Gili is any longer totally in control.

Gurfinkel’s feature debut, “Six Acts” is billed by its producers, Tazfilms Prods.’s Udi Yerushalmy and Gurfinkel, as “a realistic paraphrase of a classic teen movie, a deep-dive into the ‘grey zone’ of sexual abuse.”

“For me, ‘Six Acts’ is a daring and refreshing look at teenage identity struggle,” said Films Distribution partner Nicholas Brigaud Robert.

He added: “The movie very cleverly dares to explore the discovery of sexual desire as both a weakness and an instrument of power in these young characters. That will be a strong point for the international market.”

Films Distribution has worked regularly and successfully on Israeli movies.

Eran Ricklis’ “Lemon Tree” was one of the big arthouse sales hits at 2008’s Berlin; “Eyes Wide Open,” Haim Tabakman’s gay love story set in an ultra-orthodox Jewish community, played Cannes’ 2009 Un Certain Regard and Toronto.

This June, Strand Releasing picked up North American rights to Israeli director Eytan Fox’s “Yossi,” following its premiere at Tribeca.
