Film based on Daniel Clay's novel stars Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy

Film Movement has acquired North American rights to Rufus Norris’ “Broken,” which opened the Critics Week sidebar at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Based on Daniel Clay’s novel of the same name, the film stars Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy and Eloise Laurence.

Film Movement plans a New York theatrical release in the first quarter with a limited national rollout to follow, as well as VOD.

Pic centers on an 11-year-old unwittingly drawn into her neighbors’ unfolding melodrama involving violence, sex and life-shattering illness.

Charles Gant wrote in his Cannes review for Variety, “Melding heightened drama with quirky, state-of-the-nation social realism, the pic aims to undercut epic plot contrivance with naturalistic perfs and a lyrical shooting style.”

The acquisition was negotiated by Film Movement’s president Adley Gartenstein and Carole Baraton of Wild Bunch.
