New distributor Film Arcade has made its first acquisition since launching just before the Sundance Film Festival, partnering with Lionsgate to nab “The Other Dream Team,” a documentary that chronicles Lithuania’s 1992 Olympics bronze medal-winning basketball squad.
Longtime producer Marius Markevicius’ directorial debut premiered in the U.S. docu section at this year’s Sundance, where Variety first reported that Ambush Entertainment producers Miranda Bailey and Matthew Leutwyler, as well as Andy Bohn and Jason Beck, were launching Film Arcade.
The self-described “filmmaker-friendly” standalone outfit, which actively pursued titles during the January fest, aims for four to six features per year. Now it has its first title in “Dream Team,” an uplifting docu that highlights the tiny Baltic country’s obsession with basketball and its 1992 medal run at the Barcelona Games, where the Grateful Dead came onboard to help the cause by providing Dead-style tie-dye uniforms in national colors.
Markevicius produced along with Jon Weinbach; Jennifer Cochis and Linas Ryskus co-produced.
Final paperwork on the North American rights deal was still being finalized, and just how Film Arcade and Lionsgate plan to divvy the release was not immediately disclosed, though a theatrical run is in the works.
The sale was repped by WME.
