Filmmakers focus on lack of female directors at Cannes
The sun finally shone on the Croisette Tuesday afternoon as the women from the Stockholm Film Festival donned fake moustaches to make a point about the lack of female directors in competition this year. The Swedish festival was celebrating the 2011 launch of its scholarship fund for women directors with the first winner, Sofia Norlin, in attendance. The Paris-based Swedish director will bring her debut feature, “Tenderness,” funded by the award, to the Stockholm Festival in November. Git Scheynius, Stockholm fest head, praised Cannes for its “tremendously good work” but said she did not think it had “the right angle” when it came to showcasing the work of femme directors. Stockholm’s award, backed by mobile operator Telia, is worth $1.9 million. Swedish pubcaster SVTV is adding a further $130,000 for awards planned over the next two years.
