Pick ups feed need for nature docs, horror movie spoofs

BERLIN — German auds love opulent nature docs and horror movie spoofs, and Berlin-based distrib Falcom is looking to meet the demand with its new Cannes acquisitions, “The Penguin King 3D” and Marlon Wayans’ “Untitled Found Footage Comedy.”

Produced by Anthony Geffen and Sias Wilson, the $20 million “Penguin King” is narrated by David Attenborough and follows a young penguin that grows up to become a fully-fledged king in the Antarctic.

Kaleidoscope, which is releasing “Penguin King” in the U.K., is handling world sales on the doc.

If “Untitled Found Footage Comedy,” which sends up movies likes of “Paranormal Activity,” follows in the footsteps of the hugely popular “Scary Movie” franchise, Falcom could have a major winner on its hands: the first “Scary Movie” took in more than $24 million at the German box office. Wayans and producer Rick Alvarez co-wrote “Untitled Found Footage Comedy,” which IM Global is selling internationally.
