Italian helmer to receive lifetime achievement award

LONDON — Italian helmer Bernardo Bertolucci is to receive the European Film Academy’s lifetime achievement award, it was announced Tuesday.

With a career spanning six decades, Bertolucci started out as an assistant director on Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Accattone,” before directing his first feature, “The Grim Reaper,” at the age of 21.

Bertolucci won the Academy Award for best director in 1987 for “The Last Emperor,” one of nine Oscars it received, including best picture.

The helmer’s latest film, “Me and You,” premiered out of competition earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival.

Other works include: “Before the Revolution,” “The Conformist,” “Last Tango in Paris,” “1900” and “The Dreamers.”

The award will be presented to Bertolucci at the 25th European Film Awards in Malta on Dec. 1.
