Pix from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman join section

ROME — The Dubai Film Festival’s Gulf Voices Showcase will feature works from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Oman.

The only feature film in this key non-competitive section is Omani director Khalid Zidjali’s “Aseel,” about the struggles of a nine-year-old boy to preserve his heritage and village. The other works unspooling are shorts, including one titled “Factory of Lies,” shot in Saudi Arabia and Chicago by Saudi tyro helmer Hamzah Jamjoom.

Fest artistic topper Masoud Amralla said the works offer “some unique perspectives on the Arab world today.”

The fest, which is a committed driver for grass-roots projects from local talent, will run Dec. 9-16.
