Drafthouse scores rights to ‘Killing’

Doc on Indonesian death squad leaders set for 2013 release

Drafthouse Films has acquired U.S. rights to Danish filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer’s documentary “The Act of Killing” for a 2013 release.

The movie, which screened at the Toronto and Telluride International Film Festivals, explores former Indonesian death squad leaders who are challenged to reenact their real-life mass-killings.

“The Act of Killing” was produced by Signe Byrge Sørensen for Final Cut for Real.

Variety’s Peter Debruge said in his Toronto review, ” The incendiary experiment is a bombshell, both for opening the world’s eyes to Indonesia’s recent bloody history and vis a vis the tradition of objective nonfiction filmmaking. Already a hot potato at its Telluride premiere, pic will stir controversy wherever it travels.”

The deal was negotiated by Tim League, James Emanuel Shapiro and Evan Husney on behalf of Drafthouse Films and Philippa Kowarsky of Cinephil on behalf of the film’s producers.
