Disney has elevated “Planes” and will open the animated comedy movie theatrically on Aug. 9.

Studio had originally intended to release “Planes” on direct-to-video. The story focuses on a cropduster named Dusty.

Jon Cryer had been attached previously to voice the lead character but that deal fell through.

“Planes” will open against Sony’s sci-fier “Elysium,” starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, and New Line’s road-trip comedy “We’re The Millers,” starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis.
