Dennie Gordon to helm ‘Lucky Star’

Director signs on for Chinese-language prod of 'Sophie's Revenge' prequel

Dennie Gordon has come on to direct the Chinese-language production of “My Lucky Star,” the prequel to “Sophie’s Revenge.”

Shooting has started on the film, presented by Bona Entertainment and produced by Ling Lucas, Beaver Kwei, Second Chan, William Cheng and Zhang Ziyi — who also stars with Chinese singer Wang Leehom.

Gordon developed the romantic comedy with Beaver Kwei, Amy Snow and Huang Hai.

Ziyi reprises her role as Sophie with the story set in Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau.

“We are doing something new and very exciting, where a specific Hollywood style is brought to a Chinese feature,” Gordon said.

Ziyi’s credits include “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “House of Flying Daggers,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and the upcoming “Dangerous Liaisons” directed by Hur Jin Ho and “Grand Masters” from Wong Kar-Wai.

Gordon’s previous credits include multiple episodes of “30 Rock” and “The Office” and won a DGA Award for HBO’s Tracey Takes On. She has also directed the feature films “Joe Dirt,” “New York Minute” and “What a Girl Wants.”

Producers said Gordon is the first American woman to direct a feature for the domestic market in China.

Gordon is represented by CAA.
