Deaner to head Oz producers’ org

Brown steps down after 16 years at SPAA

SYDNEY — Geoff Brown, the long-standing topper of the Screen Producers’ Assn. of Australia, will be replaced by Matthew Deaner.

Deaner, who was a senior exec at industry org Screen Australia and pay TV org the Australian Subscriptions Television and Radio Assn., will take on the role of advancing producers’ interests in a world of converging technologies.

“With the government’s Convergence Review and Cultural Review to be implemented, there is a momentous task ahead for SPAA to ensure that our screen industries are not sidelined and that Australian independent producers’ content is absolutely front and center in the outcomes that emanate from these important reviews,” said SPAA prexy Brian Rosen. “We are at an important crossroads and are thrilled that Matthew will be leading the organization through this next critical phase.”

Brown, who headed the SPAA for 16 years, led the org during a period of great change, such as the launch of the international Producer Offset to encourage runaway production, and he boosted membership of SPAA. His contribution to the local screen industry will be honored at the annual SPAA conference, to be held in Melbourne Nov. 12-15.
