Cruise gets marshmallow roast

Thesp feted by Friars

Tom Cruise was all giggles as a parade of industryites very, very gently ribbed him June 12 during the Friars Foundation gala at the Waldorf-Astoria. With daughter Suri sprawled across his lap, the beaming leading man picked up the Friars’ fourth-ever Icon Award, while former co-stars like Kevin Pollak and Bill Hader recalled on-set foibles. Still, the night’s humor bore little resemblance to a typical Friar bash (think best man wedding speech rather than raunchy roast). Even emcee Alec Baldwin could do little more than lavish praise, recalling a benign “Rock of Ages” anecdote.

“Tom built a bonfire, and when they rolled the camera, he lit it,” Baldwin enthused. “And believe me, it burned white hot.”
