Comic-Con: D’Works fires up ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’

Toon house touts 'Guardians,' 'Croods' at confab

DreamWorks Animation is moving ahead with a third “Kung Fu Panda” feature, the studio announced Thursday at Comic-Con.

Bill Damaschke, chief creative officer for the studio, confirmed the third installment of the popular toon franchise while discussing the animation company’s upcoming slate.

The first two “Panda” pics, starring Jack Black, have grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide.

“Right now we have 10 movies in production and eight or nine in pre-production or advanced form of script development,” Damaschke told the audience at D’Works Animation’s Comic Con panel Friday.

Among the other new features touted were Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Thanksgiving pic “Rise of the Guardians” as well as caveman toon “The Croods,” which features the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and Nicolas Cage.

“Croods,” set for release on March 22, follows a caveman and his family who are locked out of their cave and forced to explore the world beyond.

Also on the horizon for the toon house are fantasy comedy “Me and My Shadow,” voiced by “Saturday Night Live” star Bill Hader and “Book of Mormon” thesp Josh Gad, and the “Madagascar” penguins spinoff, helmed by Simon Smith.

The “Penguins of Madagascar” spinoff is slated to hit theaters in 2015.
