Russians debate cross-border projects

Untold stories from Russia’s tumultuous past and present were among co-production projects pitched at a packed Variety-sponsored event at the Russian Pavilion in Cannes Monday.

Russian producers Anna Katchko and Artiom Vasilyev joined Katriel Schory, head of Israel’s Film Fund, Poland’s Dariusz Jablonski and Leonid Demchenko, Russia’s Eurimages representative, to discuss the pros and cons of cross-border projects in a lively debate chaired by Nick Holdsworth, Variety’s Eastern Europe bureau chief.

Passion for the story above all else is what makes or breaks a co-production, along with a sober understanding of the challenges of the “three-year roller-coaster ride of making a movie,” were the key things to remember when embarking on a co-prod, the panelists agreed.
