City Year committed to keeping kids in school

Stacey Snider a board member of org's L.A. wing

It’s hard to say no to an org that is as committed to the goal of keeping kids in school as City Year.

That’s what DreamWorks’ Stacey Snider has discovered in her role as a board member of the org’s Los Angeles wing. Exec director Allison Graff-Weisner and board members have lined up an impressive list of showbiz sponsors for City Year L.A.’s second annual Spring Break fundraiser event, set for May 5 at Sony Studios.

Forget rubber chicken — the bash features an array of interactive booths and musical perfs aimed at getting attendees on their feet. It’s also meant to be a celebration of the 200-plus City Year L.A. corps members who devote a year to serving as full-time mentors (for a modest stipend) to middle-school students at risk of dropping out.

“They’re there for more than just a little bit of homework help,” Snider said of the mentors. “They just embed themselves in the lives of their students. And when those kids start to wobble, there’s a person there to prop them up.”
