Cinema Guild picks up ‘Macao’ for U.S.

DVD, VOD will follow theatrical release next year

The Cinema Guild has acquired U.S. distribution rights to “The Last Time I Saw Macao” for a theatrical release next year followed by a DVD/VOD rollout.

“Macao” is directed by Lisbon-born Joao Pedro Rodrigues (“To Die Like a Man”) and Joao Rui Guerra da Mata. The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of the Cinema Guild with Jean-Christophe Simon of Films Boutique.

“Macao” explores the psychic pull of the titular former Portuguese colony and da Mata’s offscreen recollections of growing up in the gambling haven. He’s returned to Macao to help a friend who later vanishes.

Rodrigues’ credits include “O Fantasma” (2000) and “Odette” (2005). Da Mata co-wrote 2009’s “To Die Like a Man” (2009), and “Macao” is his first feature film as director.
