Chong’s ‘Famous’ to rep Singapore at Oscars

Pic joins race for foreign-language nom

BEIJING — Singapore thesp Michelle Chong’s directorial bow “Already Famous” will represent the island-state in the foreign language category at the Oscars.

Chong wrote, helmed and starred in the movie about a smalltown Malaysian girl who dreams of becoming a TV star in Singapore.

Chong is best known as a comic actress on Singapore TV, and the pic features Taiwan thesp Alien Huang in his first Singapore role. Pic also features TV stars Cynthia Koh, Alaric Tay, Pornsak and Nat Ho playing themselves.

Released by Scorpio East Pictures and Cathay Keris Films, pic is presented by Huat Films and produced by Chong and Pauline Yu.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the five nominees for best foreign film on Jan. 10. The 85th Academy Awards ceremony takes place Feb. 24.
