The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television is merging its Genie Awards for film and Gemini TV Awards into one gala in 2013.
Academy chairman Martin Katz said Tuesday the link-up will create a bigger footprint for the awards show. The Genies honor English- and French-language Canuck cinema and the ceremony usually takes place in March. The Geminis, for English TV, is in September. The combined awards show will air live March 3 on pubcaster CBC. The acad’s Gemeaux Awards for French-language TV will continue as a separate show, airing on pubcaster Radio-Canada on Sept. 16. The Genies and Geminis have garnered only so-so TV ratings, and the acad hopes the combined gala will up those numbers.Canuck kudofests to merge
