Cannes adds ‘Oath of Tobruk’ to lineup

Libya-set docu to play as Special Screening

PARIS — French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy’s “The Oath of Tobruk” has been added to the Official Selection of the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

The Libya-set docu will play in the Special Screening section.

Lensed over eight months, the doc examines the unfolding of the Libyan Civil War, which started as a spontaneous popular revolt and evolved into a full-fledged revolution that ended Muammar Gaddafi’s dictatorship. Doc also shows the determination of Libyan rebels, and the support they received from international communities, notably from France, the U.K. and the U.S.

” ‘The Oath of Tobruk’ illustrates how ideas and convictions can alter the course of history in the form of a political and humanitarian intervention that had heretofore seemed unthinkable,” said the fest. “That demonstration makes all the more disturbing the spectacle of daily killings that began around the same time in Bashar Al Assad’s Syria and that continues to this day.”

The festival is also inviting four key figures of the Libyan revolution to attend the screening.

“The selection of ‘The Oath of Tobruk’ by Gilles Jacob and Thierry Fremaux reminds us that a film can represent a passing of the torch between people inspired by a shared love of freedom,” added the festival.
