Bruni to lead Rome’s Perspectives jury

Section to open with tribute to Carlo Verdone

ROME

The rebooted Rome Film Festival is gearing up for its first edition headed by Marco Mueller: It’s announced details of its Perspectives Italy section and will unveil fest’s full lineup, said to include 60 world premieres, on Oct. 10.

Mueller, formerly topper of the Venice Film Festival, picked Italo helmer-scribe Francesco Bruni (“Scialla!”) as prexy of the Perspectives Italy jury, signalling continuity between the Controcampo Italiano sidebar he started in Venice that was killed off by his successor, Alberto Barbera.

Bruni’s “Scialla!” (Easy!), a laffer about parenting and adolescence, became a sleeper hit and local standout after playing in Controcampo in 2011.

Bruni’s fellow Perspectives Italy jury members are Rome-based Iranian-born film editor and thesp Babak Karimi, Italo helmer Anna Negri (“Good Morning Heartache”), Italo documaker Stefano Savona (“Tahrir: Liberation Square”) and Chinese actress Zhao Tao (“I Am Li”).

Perspectives Italy will open with a tribute to Italo comic Carlo Verdone titled “Carlo!” by Gianfranco Giagni and Fabio Ferzetti. Verdone, a Rome native and longtime local box office champ, is working on Paolo Sorrentino’s “La grande bellezza” (The Great Beauty), about the Eternal City’s glamorous society.

The fest’s 7th edition runs Nov. 9-17.
