Bret Ratner, CJ team on ‘Golden Age’

Filmmaker will produce with an eye to directing

Brett Ratner’s Rat Entertainment and South Korea-based CJ Entertainment are teaming up to develop “The Golden Age” — an East-meets-West buddy action adventure franchise. Ratner will produce with an eye to directing the first film, to be called “The Golden Age: The Lost Treasure of Zheng He.”

CJ Entertainment’s Miky Lee and Julian Jeong are exec producing’ Rat Entertainment’s John Cheng and CJ Entertainment’s Minyoung Hong will spearhead the development and produce.

For Ratner, the project is familiar turf. He directed New Line’s Jackie Chan-Chris Tucker “Rush Hour” trilogy, which grossed more than $800 million worldwide.

“Since ‘Rush Hour,’ I wanted to make movies that introduce Asian culture and talent to audiences and help create new global icons,” he said. “Teaming up with CJ and Miky Lee has been a great experience as we all share an active commitment to making internationally appealing films.”

JP Lavin and Chad Damiani (“Max Steel,” “How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack”) are writing the script, centered on a British puzzle expert, a worldly Chinese police officer and a mysterious Chinese female pirate who must work together to find China’s greatest hidden treasures.

Julian Jeong, head of international production at CJ Entertainment, said: “We love the passion and vision that Brett Ratner brings to this project. His movies are full of humor, suspense and action.”

CJ Entertainment is part of Asia’s media conglome CJ E&M, which enjoys leading market positions in South Korea with its film production and distribution, cable and music and live performance divisions. It launched in 1995 with a major investment in DreamWorks, and its entertainment ventures include the exhibition chain CGV.
