Event rewards firms that release the most local films

The film-promotion program Cinema do Brasil has opened the first phase of its Distributors World Cup, a competition that rewards distribution companies that bring Brazilian films to exhibitors around the world.

The enrollment for the competition, which ranks distributors by the number of Brazilian films a company has released since 2005, will close Dec. 17. The winning company will be invited to attend the renowned Rio de Janeiro Carnival in February.

The second phase of the Distributors World Cup, held in 2013, will reward the top three distribs with invitations to attend a match of the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament, taking place in Brazil in summer 2014. The top two companies will also receive $30,000 to fund the launch of Brazilian films.

Cinema do Brasil and the Distributors World Cup is supported by Apex-Brasil, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency.
