‘Brave’ shows grit at Friday B.O.

Pixar toon earns $24.5 mil, expected to top weekend; 'Lincoln' second with $6.3 mil

The kids are having their way this weekend with a pair of 3D family pics coexisting neatly at the top of the domestic B.O., led by newcomer “Brave” with $24.5 million from Friday.

The latest Disney-Pixar entry, their 13th and first with a female protagonist, is expected to land in the mid-$60 million range, though it could overperform contingent on a Friday-to-Saturday uptick common with family fare.

Braving “Brave,” holdover “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” continues to perform at the domestic B.O. The Paramount-DreamWorks toon earned $6.1 million Friday for a new cume of $143.4 million.

Wedged between the two, though not expected to stay there, Fox’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” slew a modest segment of adults with its straight-faced camp for $6.3 million Friday. It will take a slight surge of interest from outside the pool of fans of the Seth Grahame-Smith novel to break $20 million as the pic has little in the way of star power to draw auds in.

Fox’s “Prometheus” earned $2.9 million Friday, and behind it Sony’s “That’s My Boy,” Warner Bros.’ “Rock of Ages” and Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” are caught in a three-way dead heat with $2.5 million from Friday. Despite midweek interest, “Rock” is still outpacing “Boy” with a $23.3 million cume to “Boy’s” $22.7 million.
