Branagh’s ‘Jack Ryan’ sets sights on Christmas Day 2013

Chris Pine, Keira Knightly star in the reboot

Paramount is continuing its recent strategy of dating actioners for the holiday season, setting the Kenneth Branagh-helmed “Jack Ryan” reboot for Christmas Day 2013.

The studio successfully released “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” around Christmas last year and will bow another Tom Cruise actioner, “Jack Reacher,” on Dec. 21.

“Jack Ryan” stars Chris Pine as the young covert CIA analyst, who uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack. Keira Knightley will play Ryan’s love interest; Kevin Costner and Branagh are set to co-star.

The film will compete directly for male attention with Universal’s 3D epic “47 Ronin.” Fox’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” which also bows that day, should lay claim to the holiday family market.
