MADRID — Cohen Media Group has acquired all U.S. rights to Pablo Berger’s black-and-white silent cinema tribute “Blancanieves,” Spain’s entry for the foreign-language Oscar.
Sold by Madrid’s Dreamcatchers, “Blancanieves” recasts the Snow White tale in 1920s’ Seville, with the heroine becoming a feisty femme bullfighter. Lead-produced by Spain’s Arcadia Motion Pictures, “Blancanieves” world preemed at Toronto, earning rave reviews and multiple offers for U.S. distribution. Pic won a special jury award and actress laurels for Macarena Garcia at San Sebastian. CMG will now make a significant push to snag a foreign-language nomination, said exec VP Gary Rubin.
