Bier seeks more Oscar ‘Love’

Bille August competes for place in Academy race

LONDON — Susanne Bier, whose last film “In a Better World” won the 2010 foreign-language film Academy Award, is in the running for the Oscars again.

Her romantic comedy “Love Is All You Need,” is one of three films shortlisted in the contest to be Denmark’s candidate at next year’s kudos. Bier’s “After the Wedding” was also Oscar nommed in 2006.

Love Is All You Need,” which stars Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm, world preems at the Venice Film Festival, and also plays at Toronto. Bier wrote the screenplay with Anders Thomas Jensen, who co-penned “In a Better World.”

Bier competes for the Danish entry spot with Bille August, whose “Pelle the Conqueror” won the foreign-lingo film Oscar in 1988. He vies this year with historical drama “Marie Kroyer,” which is his first Danish film in 25 years. It is being screened for the first time this week at an industry-only preview at the New Nordic Films Market in Haugesund, Norway.

The third pic on the shortlist is Nikolaj Arcel’s costumer “A Royal Affair,” which won two Silver Bears in Berlin for script and actor.

The films on the shortlist were selected by a committee set up by the Danish Film Institute and other film biz orgs. The committee will name the winning candidate on Sept. 18.

CEO of the Danish Film Institute, Henrik Bo Nielsen, who is chairman of the committee, said: “It hasn’t been an easy choice this year. We had to choose between many qualified candidates. The result is three films with great international potential.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces the five nominations for foreign-language film Jan. 15.
