‘Avengers’ earns $29.1 mil to rule Friday B.O.

Disney actioner flirts with soph sesh record; 'Shadows' trails with $9.7 mil

With a $29.1 million gross Friday, Disney’s “The Avengers” is out adventuring for the soph sesh domestic B.O. record, but it may require a slightly stronger hold to beat it.

Compared with last Friday, the actioner is performing 64% below its opening weekend. This is a reasonable drop for a B.O. buster like “Avengers,” but if it persists through Sunday, pic will fall barely short of beating “Avatar’s” second frame feat of $75.5 million. Still, the film has displayed extraordinary traction thus far, particularly in mid-week sales, and may very well close the gap as Mother’s Day weekend progresses.

Warner Bros.’ “Dark Shadows” earned $9.7 million Friday for second place. The eighth Johnny Depp-Tim Burton collaboration is headed for an opening frame in the high-$20 million range. The tough start for this period comedy, based on the 60s soap opera of the same name, can be attributed to second sesh interest in “Avengers” for older auds. “Shadows” has been tracking better with women over 25, and adult crowds tend to wait a week on major releases, which bodes well for “Avengers” and not so for “Shadows.”

The $100 million-budgeted “Shadows” should have no problem overseas, however, as Burton’s pics perform remarkably strongly internationally.

Sony Screen Gems’ “Think Like a Man” followed with $1.6 million, bringing its cume to $77.2 million, and Warner Bros.’ “The Lucky One” grossed $1.3 million.
