‘Avengers’ crosses $600 million mark

Becomes third-highest domestic grossing film of all time

“The Avengers” crossed the $600 million domestic mark through Tuesday, another major milestone for what’s now the third-highest Stateside grosser of all time. But the Disney/Marvel’s juggernaut didn’t get there quite as fast as “Avatar” did — nor should it threaten high water marks set by James Cameron’s “Titanic” and “Avatar.”

“Avatar” touched the $600 million peg in its seventh frame — “Avengers” needed eight — and reigns at $760 million domestically. The No. 2 spot still belongs to “Titanic,” which grossed $600.8 million in its initial run and jumped to $658 million in its 3D re-release, giving it what should be a safe distance from “The Avengers'” ultimate figure.

With a colossal global tally of $1.438 billion, “Avengers” already holds the record for the biggest domestic opening and second-weekend grosses.

The positions change dramatically when adjusted for inflation, however: By that measure, “Avengers” ranks No. 27. “Titanic,” with $1.07 billion, is the fifth-highest domestic grosser of all time; 1939’s “Gone with the Wind” tops the chart, at $1.6 billion (based on that pic’s actual $198 million lifetime gross).

“Avengers” has been the summer’s most resilient box office player, but is running out of steam domestically, grossing $7 million last weekend.

Globally, “Avengers” is the 12th film to breach the billion-dollar threshold and the fifth for Disney, joining “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Toy Story 3” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

In domestic studio marketshare, Disney leads the pack to date, with $889.8 million, followed by Sony ($742.3 million) and Universal ($731.4 million). Lionsgate-Summit, at $602.1 million, currently is outpacing the other majors: Warner Bros. ($565.4 million), Fox ($547.3 million) and Paramount ($492.6 million).
