Asanti lights up ‘Candelabra’

Thesp joins Soderbergh's Liberace pic

Pat Asanti has been cast in the upcoming Liberace film “Behind the Candelabra” for HBO Films, to be directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.

Asanti will play the pianist’s brother, George Liberace.

Douglas stars while Damon plays his live-in lover, Scott Thorson, whose memoir “My Life With Liberace” serves as the basis for the project. Dan Aykroyd, Debbie Reynolds and Scott Bakula recently signed on to co-star.

Richard LaGravenese wrote the script. Gregory Jacobs and Susan Ekins will produce, while Jerry Weintraub will exec produce. After debuting on HBO, “Candelabra” will get a theatrical release outside the U.S. and Canada. Plan is for HBO Enterprises to sell the pic to independent distributors. Production is set to begin this summer.

Asanti is represented by KSR Talent and Discover Management.
