Artificial Eye takes ‘Ai Weiwei’

DCM nabs German-speaking Europe

LONDON — Artificial Eye has snapped up U.K. rights to Sundance award-winner ”Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry,” while DCM nabbed the pic for German-speaking Europe.

Pic, which was being shopped in Berlin by Independent Film Company, screened at the fest as part of the Berlinale Special Screenings.

Story follows Ai Weiwei, China’s most famous international artist and outspoken domestic critic. Against a backdrop of strict censorship, Ai expresses himself and organizes people through art and social media.

In response, Chinese authorities shut down his blog, beat him up, bulldoze his newly built studio and hold him in secret detention.

Docu is helmed by Alison Klayman, who gained unprecedented access to Ai while working as a journalist in China.

Pic won a Sundance special jury prize in Park City in January.

Klayman produces with Adam Schlesinger while Karl Katz, Julie Goldman and Andrew Cohen exec produce.

Independent Film Company is handling international rights while Cinetic Media reps North American rights.
